Youth Engagement
Youth engagement is an inclusive, intentional, mutually respectful partnership between the youth, the community and Law Enforcement. In this context, power between youth, law enforcement, and the community is shared and respective contributions are valued. Young people’s ideas, perspectives, skills and strengths are integrated into design and delivery of programs, strategies, policies, funding mechanisms and organizations that effect their lives and their communities.
This regional conference recognizes and seeks to change the power structures that prevent young people from being considered experts in regard to their own needs and priorities.
This youth engagement will focus on programs, projects, or strategies needed for a vision of what youth engagement looks like. It recognizes that power structures have historically limited youth participation, and young people have been treated only as beneficiaries, not partners.
We will provide a youth /law enforcement mentorship that encourages meaningful, intergenerational dialogue on a variety of issues that affect youth in their communities. When youth feel they are a respected part of their communities, they will become and stay more engaged.
“Youth champions” will discuss their experiences with law enforcement in promoting a safe place for youth and setting the example for others to follow. They will receive development measurement tools (social, cultural, and economic) for their tool box when encountering law enforcement. (“The Talk”)
This forum allows an opportunity for the sharing of resources, and experiences among law enforcement, youth leaders, church community, community and others who fully support the youth.
Included in the event will be fun activities that demonstrate the negative and positive aspects of today’s climate. There will be spoken word, music, and Hip Hop entertainers describing their views on law enforcement. A free lunch for youth in attendance will contribute to a non-intimidating environment as youth and other stakeholders collaborate.
Our main goal for this youth engagement will be to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and youth, build trust and promote a positive image of law enforcement while stimulating a better understanding.
The youth have a voice!
